L98, LS1, 350 ?????????
Hi folks,
I'm new to your site and new to bowtie power. I have a Jeep CJ8 that I am in the process of finishing my Chevrolet V8 and 700R4 swap. I was told the motor was a '92 5.7 and the #'s seem to indicate that but what is the difference between L98, LS1 etc??? I'm very much looking forward to hearing my Jeep roar and knowing what I actually have would be nice. how about some help????
Thanks!!

Re: L98, LS1, 350 ?????????
L98 is the RPO code (option code) for the Tuned Port Injection 350 that came in Camaros, Firebirds, and Corvettes from '87-92. Its based on the Gen 1 small block (same one thats been around since the 1950s basically), though starting in '87 those engines got hydraulic roller cams, instead of the regular flat-tappet lifters.
The LS1 is a whole different animal from the L98 - its the Gen III small block (LT1 was Gen II) which shares absolutely nothing in common with the Gen I and Gen II small blocks. Nothing interchanges. The LS motors (LS1, LS6, LS7, and various other variations with displacements of 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L aluminum block, 6.0L, 6.0L aluminum block, 6.2L aluminum block, and 7.0L aluminum block) started in '97 in the Corvette, '98 in the Camaro/Firebird, and '00 in trucks and vans I believe.

The roller lifters are interchangeable from L98,LT1,LS1,LS6,LS7. Thats the only thing they all have in common
