timing tab question

its a 91 350 out of a caddy, roller motor, i have a msd 6al setup and it has a holly 650, ive been having issues with it since day 1. i bought a aftermarket chrome timing tab, it bolts in the same location as the stock one, but my question is, when i had the motor at tdc on the stand the mark on the balancer was a good 1/2 inch away from the nearest mark on the tab, what could cause this? i need to time the motor but am not sure about the tab, also what is the factory setting? its a 91 350 from a caddy fleetwood broughamthanks steve

Re: timing tab question

there are different timing tabs for chevy engines.
each tab goes with a certain size crank dampner.
you have to measure the dampner.
----------
also if the tab IS the correct one.
the outside ring on the dampner could have shifted.
check that out.
