Starting issues solved!
For the past 3 months, I have been plagued by the infamous problem of a car that won't start, even though the battery in the car will start another car. New battery, new starter, new cables (they were all onld- gave me an excuse to upgrade) didn't help it at all. After much head scratching and even more cussing, I found 2 problems in the starting circuit.
#1 Water had leaked into the car from a previously repaired leaking T-Top seal, and had caused corrosion in the starter enable relay located in the drivers side kick panel (this will only apply for '89 - '92 F-Bodies with VATS). This was not a huge problem, but it did add a few ohms of resistance.
#2 The ignition switch. Everyone has at one point or another suffered a case of the floppy steering column. This play in the column can actually cause the igition switch to be out of adjustment (Yes there is an adjustment). A combination of age (resulting in a significant resistance increase in the switch) and the floppy column (that I finally got the tool to repair properly) had damaged the switch.
Once I made these repairs, the car starts like it did when it was new.
