fuel gauge varies huge....sending unit damaged?

Well, i just replaced my fuel pump (and pulsator and strainer while i was in there) and now i noticed the fuel gauge is all over the place. It seems to change instantly instead of having a delay from the effects of fuel sloshing. When braking or accelerating it will vary sometimes even more than 1/4 of a tank! And will even chang a good 1/8 on slight up and down hills.

What the heck could have happened? Could this be the sending unit or maybe the gauge itself? Seems odd that it is right after a pump change though, but i did nothing to it other than the arm went up an down a few times in the process.

THis is very annoying though as i now only know how much gas i have to a 1/4 tank approximation

Any one else experience this?

thanks.

My '84 z28 does the exact same thing. When i brake it will change up to a 1/4 of a tank or more and sometimes it will just move for no apparent reason.

It's pretty much normal. I've seen mine go from 3/4 a tank to 1/4 a tank in the process of cruising, braking, then accelerating from a stop.

Try grounding the tank.

well, the sending unit is grouded through the black wire on the harness.

Now what i had done though......i noticed where the black wire attaches to the top of the sending unit it was a good bit rusty. SO i cut the wire off the clip and crimped a new clip on and had it tack welded to the sending unit. I then applied a bunch of permatex dieclectric grease to the exposed part to prevent future corrosion.

I did have a case on our mazda where a connection was corroded so i cleaned it up and used that "sil glyde" goop for spark plug wires thinking it was dielectric grease. It then set a code. I cleaned all the goop out and all was good I don't understand how the heck that was possible but ??????? I can't imagine that would be the case here though, it's dielectric grease for crying out loud. What do you guys think, you guys ever use that before?
