Quick question - 350 Blocks

Hi all.

Is there any significant difference in the blocks between a 350 4-bolt main 1988 block (not sure if L-98 or LO5) and the 96-2000 L-31 4-bolt block?

Looking to make a roller cam set up stroker and wondered if they are the same block or if there are differences that would be advantageous in a stroker build.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Quick question - 350 Blocks

The blocks are the same as far as the casting goes, but if you are looking at the L98/L05 block, make sure it has the finishing machine work for the roller lifters done. Lots of L05 truck engines did not use a roller cam, so GM did not do the finish machining on the roller lifter retainer stands in the lifter valley. If the 3 cast 'stands' are not machined flat on the tops and not drilled and tapped for a bolt, then that would need to be done to use a GM-style roller cam setup.

The L31 used a roller cam, so all this work will already be done on the newer block - but it can be hit or miss on the older ones, as only cars got roller cams and trucks did not, even though they used the same engine block.

Re: Quick question - 350 Blocks

The vast majority of the LO5 blocks still have the machining done, but it's still a good idea to check.
