I bought my 383 off of my buddy b4 he went to iraq. Problem is the damper is seperating. I cant get a hold of him. i dont know about the balancincg if it was int/ext.I dont know what balanced damper to put on it. Can i put a ext balnced damper on there? 2nd question.. what size. i figured smaller is better due to less weight. or wouls bigger be better to take the most harmonics out?

All 383 and 400 engines are externally balanced. Go buy a balancer for a car with a 400 and you will be set.

Not necessarily. You can buy an internally balanced 3.75 inch stroke crank, they're not hard to find. They just never came from the factory like that. (referring to sbc cranks with a 3.75 inch stroke)

Re: newbie dampner question
If it's a stock type balancer, flip it over and look at the back of it. A balancer for an internally balanced engine will have the same thickness all around, for an externally balanced engine it will have material removed from the rim for half its circumference.
