Fuel Tank is out, how do i get the pump off?
OK so finally got the fuel tank dropped out, as with everything i do involving my car, there is always a catch, or something making it harder than usual. lol. but i have the tank sitting there, and i cant figure out how to get the ring holding it on off. I have the fuel pump replacement pages from the shop manual from scottmoyer.( it helped a ton thanks scott) but it describes some sort of special GM tool to get it off or something, I dont want to go bending things and stuff so can anyone provide some insight on how to get this thing out? and also, is there any special precautions i should take with the tank out? its got some gas in it, but its pouring out so i cant drain it and wash it out like i was going to, so ill have to store it overnight but im very cautious when anything involves gas in a garage.
thanks in advance

Turn the ring counter clockwise, you may need to use a large flatblade screwdriver and a hammer to tap it around. Be gentle, and don't let anyone flick their cigerettes into the tank.

It is good you are cautious, however, it is unlikely that the tank is going to burst into flames all by itself. The fumes are probably more dangerous. You can probably drain all the gas out once you have the pump off. Not a bad idea to have someone help you turn the tank over to get all the gas out into a funnel that is in a designated gasoline container. Taking the FP out of the tank is the easiest part of a FP change out. Have you thought of changing anything else while you have the tank down like bushings, etc.? Thread
