timing help for a guy who must not be that bright.
ok, so i have been messing around with my timing and cannot seem to get my car to run the way that i want it. the top end seems fine, but it needs some help down low. i know with my set-up that the bottom end will be lacking, but think that it could be better.
i am running a 700 holley DP w/ mechanical secondaries on a single plane junior victor intake. the heads are iron eagles with 2.02/1.60 and the cam has .488/.494 lift with 292/294 duration and 114 lobe seperation. i also have a petronix distributor with the middle(silver) springs, so it gives me 23 degrees of advance at 4000 rpm's. plus a 2400 stall converter. oh, ya, the engine is a 350 and i have my vacuum advance shut-off.
what do you think that my initial timing should be? do i need to use a lighter spring so that the advance on the distributor kicks in sooner? is there another option that i am missing?
thanks for any help in advance and sorry this post is so wordy.

do you have 23 degrees total or is it advancing 23 more degrees from your initial timing? if so what is your initial timing set at??

my base timing is set at 13 degrees advanced plus 23 degrees from the distributor and 0 from the vacuum advance. so a total of 36 degrees advanced.

so after more research, i think that it is a power valve selection issue and not timing.

The powerband for the Victor Jr. is 3500-8000 RPMs. You don't have any power down low because the intake doesn't make power down low. You should have at least 4000 RPMs stall with that intake.
The advance should all be in by 2500 RPMs, certainly no more than 3000. Big cams like that like the timing in early.
I tried a Holley Strip Dominator on the 396 last year, everything else the same. It felt fine on the street (I have less cam, more stall, more cubes than you do), but at the track it was consistently slower, showing up in the 60' times. You just can't expect much from wilder set-ups like you're talking.
At worst, a "stock" PV will open too early for you. It won't cause power problems per se.

i was just comparing it to my dad's set-up. he has basically the same set-up with a much bigger cam, 850 cfm holley and only a 3200 stall. it has tons of power through-out. not sure what other difference that there is, but it must be significant.
thanks for the info. i will definately change my springs and weights to get more advance early.
