Lifters Advertised Duration

Greetings,

I have a few questions about cam and lifters:
I bought a new camshaft and some solid lifters, set it all and what happen is that my friend and greasemonkey...well...started it up without setting correctly the valve lash...now they all received a hit and they can't be used anymore, I need to unmount the camshaft to check if it was damaged...I'll buy some hydraulic flat tappet lifters but...here we are I don't know which ones to buy, I don't understand the Advertised Duration and Lift "causes and effects" so if someone could explain it to me like: larger duration means more air, means more compression for example but you'll lose some..etc..I don't understand how many differents lifters with advertised duration and lift can cost exactly the same and if it's possible, what would be a good advice for my engine or does it depends on the camshaft specs.

Thank you very much.

You should be using hydraulic ROLLER lifters... NOT flat tappets.

This article answers some of your questions..

I can't use roller lifter, my block was done for flat...I don't have the holes in the valley for the spider

Re: Lifters Advertised Duration

More lift and more duration both mean more air (as long as you're not exceeding the flow capacity of the heads' intake ports), higher RPM operation, and less manifold vacuum. They have nothing to do with static compression ratio, and they don't have any impact on your choice of lifters.

Solid and hydraulic lifters aren't interchangeable. If your cam is designed for solid lifters, you use solid lifters. If it's designed for hydraulic lifters, you use hydraulic ones.

I Have this cam installed: SB Chevy 262-400, Computer Controlled 87-98" OE Hydraulic Roller Cam, Except LT1 & LT4 - .450" Int .480" Exh lift (1000-5000)

If I'm right you can swap from roller to flat, can you? so the use of flat hydraulic lifters is possible right?

No. For that cam you must have roller lifters. If you put flat lifters on it, you'd have 16 trashed lifters and 1 trashed cam instantly.

Re: Lifters Advertised Duration

That's exactly what happened...thank you for the explanation of the reason why my face was like: "Holy mother of god...what happened..." when I saw the result of putting flat lifters on a roller cam, total disaster. I didn't know, now I do, part of the noobiness...

So in order to avoid doing something stupid: any advices on what cam+lifters kit should I buy?

Thank you.

That engine needs to come apart to have all the metal that used to be the cam and lifters cleaned out of it.
