Whenever i put my car in gear it backfires alot shuts off and wont accelerate.

 

What is your timing set at?

 

im new at this stuff and how do figur out the timing

 

Fill us in alittle. How long have you had this car? how long has it been doing this? does it do it hot, cold or both?

 

my dad got it in 85 and it stopped working in like 96 and we just rebuilt it and it does it all the time and when it starts up it gets hot very fast could that be a problem

 

Rebuilt what? the motor? You need a timing light to check or set the timing. What motor is in your T/A? Running hot, back firing, and dieing...I would say running very lean or timing advanced too far. Simple test for lean, with car running spray a little carb cleaner or starting fluid in the carb/throttle body, if engine picks up speed it's lean.

There is a set timing plug you need to disconnect to set the timing on this car. Sounds like you need to get a hayes or Chiltons manual to get you started.
