Next Mod...Heads?

Hey guys got a 89 L98 car with Headers straight back to a muffler full accel ignition 30 pound ford racing injectors, K&n FIPK.

I was looking into vortech heads, but where can i find them, theres a local bone yard that has a 50 dollar carry out day, basically anything you can carry you get for 50 bucks, got a 98+front nose conversion for my buddies 94 camaro for 200 bucks great deal.

Re: Next Mod...Heads?

from everything i have gathered, vortecs are decent heads and perform well for the money (although you will need an intake with a different bolt pattern).

my thoghts are as long as you are going to do heads, spend a little bit more and go aftermarket... AFR is a top pick as the dart Pro-1's. if it was me, i would just go all the way, but i dont know your financial situation.

The vortec heads are better then what you have, but for the money it would cost for the intake and possibly having to rebuild the heads the swap may not be worth it. It may be better to just save a little and get some good afr's. The only reason why i have em on my car is i got them with a roller cam block, and a camaro parts car for $200.

Vortecs are good, but will require work.

Watch the classified section I got a set of trickflow 195's for just about what it would cost to buy and machine the vortecs.

Re: Next Mod...Heads?

first off... ur 30lb injectors are the same i got for my 383... and thats wayyyyy to large for a 350. 24lb fords or watev would be good for like 400hp easily. the 30's are good for 550hp... remember that the fords are rated at lower psi than the GM's, ford rates them at 37.5psi where GM rates theres at 43.5psi... so the ford SVO 30lb injectors are really like GM 32lb injectors. ur flooding your engine and it wont run right bc im sure its really really rich.

as far as heads... vortecs are not bad(dont forget u need vortec TPI base...400$), great bc they are cheap but to rebuild them would cost almost as much as the aftermarkets.... they also limit ur valve lift to about .470... with the stock springs, u can upgrade them, scoggin sells modified vortec heads for higher lift cams... somehting like .525 or sumthing... costing about 330-360$ a head assembled. the most u could make would be about 50hp over stock with upgraded heads... bc your cam and intake will hurt u, if ur going to do heads... i would put in a bigger cam, and upgrade the base and runners at least, then port the plenum. vortec heads require vortec base... 400$ from scoggin as well. u might be able to pick up used ones for 200$, u also have to match ur heads/cam/intake to make any power.

u throw vortec heads on a stock 350tpi with the vortec base and u got about 300hp, u throw a cam, vortec heads with TPI base, 1.6rr, and runners and u got about 340-350hp and u might be able to get away without tuning depending on the cam, tuning will help of course. vortecs are cheap except ur limiting on cam selection due to low lift of the heads and the specific vortec TPI base. other wise its worth it.

id go with reg chevy bolt patter heads like trick flow, AFR, brodix, patriot,RHS are cheap, etc... that way ur not sucked into the base right away and can upgrade later or port the hellouta the stocker... still TPIs are expensive to upgrade.u cant take full advantage of ur highflowing heads without a good matched cam, and u cant take full advantage of the high hp of cam/head swap without the intake being in check.... its a compromise... that u have to make and ur budget of course, good luck
