got a quick vortec head question
got a quick vortec head question
i have a set of 601 heads that i just put bigger valve springs on for my cam, and yesterday i just found a set of Vortec heads that have been cleaned and checked for cracks and are 100% good for 130 dollars for the set. working at a parts store works wonders on finding people wtih spare parts. but the question is can i use the valve springs i just put on my 601 heads on the vortecs? would i need any machining?

The valve guides and spring pockets typically need to be cut for performance springs on Vortec heads.
Re: got a quick vortec head question
yeah thats kinda what i had thought, i might just get them and put them aside for another motor. how would a set of vortecs with .05 over 12:1 dome pistons with stock style 350 crank and rods be? to much compression? the pistons wouldnt hit the heads would they?

You could not run pump gas. The piston might could be milled so the did not hit.

Re: got a quick vortec head question
Run 918 ls1 beehive springs and you can run a .525 lift cam w/o cutting anything. The retainers are shorter so that you do not have to cut the valve guides. Not sure on the piston to valve clearance with your application, but on a stock 350 it would not be a concern.
