So i installed an LT-1 from a 92 corvette into my 87 IROC a few years ago...i used the power steering pump that came with the engine straight out of the 92 vette.....it's connected to the factory power steering box on the IROC.....steering works fine......BUT when i take it out to the track days it recently started blowing out the cap, and the fluid got VERY hot....the line from the pump to the steering box would likely burn your hand..........the cooling loop on it is the original IROC one, never been off the car......it didn't feel very hot............last time out it also blew an o-ring where the pressure hose connects to the steering box........... any thoughts on this?? does anybody know if the corvette pump puts out too much pressure? need more cooling on it? different fluid??? thanks. Sounds like a restriction/blockage somewhere between the pump and the cooler loop to me. Either way, the pressure regulator valve inside the pump should be controlling the line pressure, which shouldn't be anywhere near high enough to blow the lid... You either have a restriction in the lines or the pressure regulator valve is stuck and you need a new pump. I would start with trying to blow compressed air through the lines and the cooling loop... With them removed, of course.

 

That's a common problem that all of us who've road raced our cars have discovered. The PS fluid will boil and push fluid out the cap on all but the coldest track days of the year.
I run an underdrive crank pulley and this cooler kit (complete version with upgraded lines) on my ImpalaSS (LT1) and haven't had further issues:

Hey thanks for the great advice. I will definately put a bigger cooler on the car this winter. I've been thrilled with it's performance out on the road courses. Only the Zo6's pass me most of the time. This dam messy problem has already cut one of my track days in half............thanks again pat
