Replacing fuel pump question?

Ok I am pretty positive my fuel pump is dead on my 92 Z28 conv't. I have read most of the posts I can find on replacing the fuel pump. I know to do it properly I have to take down the rearend and all that crap. My question is I see alot of people cutting holes in the floorboard, but all the post I have read that have done that are in coupes, has anyone does this in a convertible and if so how and is it harder. Or would it be better to just drop everything and do it right. Oh yeah and this is the second fuel pump since I have owned it since 2000. Any help would be appreciated.

Jack

What makes you think the fuel pump is bad?
Have you tried changing the filter yet?

Re: Replacing fuel pump question?

now normally i do not agree with many people that are religious in saying not to cut a hole in thier cars, but i would have to say, on a convertable, do it right. It's bad enough now before buying a 3rd gen i'm pulling up the carpet infront of the owner to make sure there isn't a hole, i would hate to find a beautiful convertable, and find out there is a hole in it. Value (yes in the view of the purchaser, not market wise) would be cut drastically on something of that nature.

Otherwise the fuel system is relatively simple to judge, when you turn the key you should hear the pump start to hum for about two seconds. Lines takes the fuel through the fuel filter, and then up to the engine bay into the fuel rail. You can very easily get a fuel pressure tester and test the pressure up under the hood, and if your reading about 40 psi, then the fuel pump is good, if it's low but relatively solid, then the filter may need replacing. Also go the parts store and replace the fuel pump relay, if nothing changes, then return it, simple as that to test as far as that goes. Test and or replace the cheap things before jumping into that 3+ hour/expensive job. Also if you have a digital volt meter, make sure that you are getting 12V at the fuel pump relay (may be inline fuse mounted on the passenger side fender rail), and make sure that when you turn the key on, that your green/white striped wire going into the fuel pump relay gets voltage, if that doesn't get voltage, your ECM could be toast. Just a few things to think about.

And just to cover all the bases that i haven't above, here is a very nice write up provided by austinthirdgen.org:

Re: Replacing fuel pump question?

I have not changed the filter, but I have tried everything on the link that 84redta posted that is what led me my conclusion of the fuel pump going out. I dont know what caused it. I drove and parked it and that was it, no noise or anything.

Re: Replacing fuel pump question?

well thats why i provided the link, incase it was one more thing to check. But being that Z28s in '92 are harder to come by than most Z28s or IROCs, much less a convertable version, i would not suggest cutting any holes. If you can get the drive shaft out easily, all you need to do is unbolt the shocks and the rear should just dangle so it's out of the way, i know you said it, but it's not as indepth as some make it sound. Not fun, but doable, hardest part is getting it up high enough.

Re: Replacing fuel pump question?

Thank you for the information. I put the back end up on stands last night, I need to borrow another jack so I can get the car higher and then put the front on stands to. Hopefully in a couple days I will atleast have the pump out.
