Starter/Flexplate Questions

Am building a 383 using a Gen 1 SBC. Also going to use a ProBuilt 700r4 which uses a 1988 and up case. The old starter mounting on this block was staggered as I can still see the old marks. The block has all 3 mounting holes and they are threaded. So,do I have to use staggered mounting and also, which flexplate should I use,168 or 153 tooth? Thanks

Re: Starter/Flexplate Questions

Staggared mounting holes are for 168 teeth. Inline is for 153.

As to what size to go with, I don't really think it matters. I believe both sizes with fit inside the 700's bellhousing. If flexplates are like ballancers, then run the biggest you can get away with.

As long as it matches your converter and is the correct ballance for the 383 (some kits are internal, others external) you should be fine. I doubt you're running a wild enoug combo to need the extra leverage of the 168 tooth plate.

FWIW:Most mini starters are setup to allow use of either size plate. They have two sets of mounting holes and bolt to the inline pattern.
