Help not Sure Exactly

I have a 350 chevy out of a 4x4 I put into my 91 Camaro. I put a edelbrock performer intake, Holley 600cfm vac secondary elect choke, with summit shorty headers. I know I need to rebuild the card since it doesnt do anything when the fuel air mixture screws are turned in all the way. However would that be a reason my headers were Glowing RED HOT? after it sat for a few I put the air cleaner on and it wouldnt start at all. before that it was hard to start. Is it because its running Lean and does the elect choke have anything to do with it also. Any info would be great.

Re: Help not Sure Exactly

it's running way lean, or your ignition is retarded too far. generally, when engines are running lean they tend to be hard to restart once they reach operating temperature (i.e. when you stopped it to put the air cleaner on). the choke won't make it run lean, but it can be an attributing factor to a hard starting problem. usually if your carb is gummed up or has debris in it the engine wont start easily, will idle poorly (if at all), and will exhibit poor running characteristics such as an off idle stumble. from what you've said, I think you might have the timing retarded and/or you may need to go up a few jet sizes, but it cant hurt to take the carb apart and go through it with brake cleaner and compressed air to make sure all orifices are clear.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the info I will work on it and double check the timing. I am timing it with the vac advance and carb plugged, thats correct right?

Re: Help not Sure Exactly

correct, to set the base timing you unhook the vac advance and plug the port on the carb

Re: Help not Sure Exactly

well I rebuilt it and when I sprayed carb cleaner on and in it the paint started comming off so thinking this carb might not be any good. when was putting back together noticed the carb didnt have a pump check ball weight or pump discharge nozzle check ball under the needle valve like the diagram/rebuild sheet showed. so I didnt put them in and havent a clue what the pump check ball weight even looks like.( there was a little metal dowel in the kit ) So the carb does adjust now however still has problems it backfired and had a little fire inside it again. Any Ideas?

Re: Help not Sure Exactly

carb cleaner (especially brake cleaner) will remove paint, but that doesn't mean that your carburetor is junk.

before you move any further, i think you need to identify/obtain all the parts that you are missing and install them in the carburetor. the backfire could be attributed it to it running lean, or the ignition timing being off. right now, I would lean toward a fuel problem. you can get carburetor help in the carburetor section of this forum; there are a lot of guys over there that know a lot about carburetors.

Re: Help not Sure Exactly

I dont have a clue what the pump discharge ballweight even looks like there wasnt one in the carb. the only thing in the kit that might be it ia a metal dowel / pin with a cut down the side
