Air filter Question
So you may remember a thread a lil while back a guy made about the ash from the volcano up here in alaska. Well I finally decided I should throw in a new air filter after that little dusting we got, but I have a question I wanted to ask.
And ftr this is actually about my 88 bronco. I take off the cover, check out the filter. Doesn't look "too" bad, i was thinking it might be pretty bad..
I pull it out, grab for the new one, but notice something weird.. a black rectangle..

Not sure what it was, but I figured part of the filter. Problem is.. my air filter i purchased from NAPA didn't come with one, and i' m not sure if that's a problem.
This is where I guess it goes.

And for the hell of it the filter

My question is,
A) What is it
B) Do I need to buy a new one
I've got it out the filter now, I just wanted to close everything up so i don't risk any dirt or ash getting in there, and I'm not sure if I'm okay to drive with it out.

Probably a breather filter. Just trace what is on the outside of the housing to wherever it goes.
However, since this is not 3rd gen, Mr.
