have to shift into 5th before reverse

hey i have a camaro with a 5 speed. i bought the thing with a hurst shifter already installed in it. i dont remember if it has always been like this but when i want to shift into reverse i have to put it in 5th gear first. the reason i have to shift there first is if i dont the gears grind. anyone know why this happens let me know

Re: have to shift into 5th before reverse

a lot of t5's are this way. there are no synchros on reverse. you put it in a forward gear to stop everything from spinning so it can go into reverse without grinding.

Re: have to shift into 5th before reverse

its normal, another way to prevent it from grinding is to start the car in reverse, because most of the time when you are putting the car in reverse is right after a start up anyway, but other than that, just put it in a forward gear first.

Re: have to shift into 5th before reverse

most of the manual cars ive driven(domestic and imports) have done this. Ive gotten used to it so i just shift into 1st then 2nd and then reverse without releasen the clutch. it has always worked for me and never grinds
