Scraping carbon off pistons?

My engine is totally torn down. Would it be a good idea to remove any carbon on my pistons? There's not a lot, just curious while they're exposed. Any good methods?

Thanks

Re: Scraping carbon off pistons?

Its a good idea to remove carbon during engine repair or overhaul.

do you have them right out of the engine?

Do you have the rings off if they are out?

I have seen various ways.

Some people buff em on a wire wheel which I don.t like.

I have seen people soak the pistons in ordinary tap water which softens the carbon and I use this myself on turbo charger clean ups.

Also some poeple use carb cleaner, some scrape em off. To clean the ring grooves carefully use an old ring to scrap the grooves out.

On industrial engines with steel pistons or steel capped pistons if it is handy I soak the crowns in muriatic acid not recommended for you at all and watch out if you use any chemicals cuz some of that stuff chews up aluminum like crazy.

damn i hate that. what I have done on cats in that situation is wire wheel Carefully. or soak with penetrating oil let sit and gently scrape with a plastic scraper which you can make. If you got air use it to blow it clean after use a shop vac as well.

hell most people will leave it alone
