Burning oil

Hi all,
Some of you know me already from my previous posts.Question.I recently replaced the stock intake and carb on my 83z-28,with a 305 motor.Having changed out the items and finally getting it started(Thanks to Randy),I noticed that there is burning oil smoke coming from the breather cap on the passenger side of the engine. The PCV is attached to a breather on the drivers side comimg from the carb (Edelbrock 600CFM ).I have been told that having done the intake swap, I should change my oil.I also replaced the valve cover gaskets while doing the intake swap.I also have noticed that the valve covers are getting pretty hot.Engine temp is normal.Any suggestions?

whats your base timing set at? You might have the timing retarded too much and making the temps raise. Have your timing set at 8*-10* advanced and see where that gets ya. Mine does it a bit too but i feel its most likely steam from the fluids being so warm.

Re: Burning oil

Hi.
Thanks for the reply.I dont really know what my timing is set at.I need to have it timed.I can turn my distributer to the point where it almost dies out and then I back it off a little to the point where it stays running.Once I do that it sounds like crap.Where do you suggest I start at.
