Idle Speed?

Whats the recommended idle speed for my car to be in when its in park, reverse and drive ( with the brake on ). I adjusted it to 1,100 in park but it seems like the vacuum advanced jumps it up to 1,400 at times. Then when I put it in reverse it drops way down to 500 and 400 sometimes. It actually died on a speed bump a couple days ago cause the rpms dropped to low. It just seems like its all over the place, I'm not quite sure what to make of that. I have a a/f guage that tells me everything is fine as far as the mixture screws are concern. Maybe my trans isnt downshifting to 1st and it hangs at a higher rpm? lol I might be the next in line asking tranny swap questions on the trans board cause this 700R4 just seems to be a pain to adjust.

Sounds like you're using timed or ported vacuum for the advance. You might try full manifold vacuum for the advance and adjusting the idle accordingly.

You also probably need to adjust the carb so the idle transitions slots are uncovered properly. See the Holley tuning sticky in the top section of the Carburetor forum.

First make sure timing is set properly, and float levels are proper.

Re: Idle Speed?

Ah ha! I found the problem. The electric choke was causing it to stick in some fast idle mode for warm up but it would never drop back down to the normal idle. Even after I tried to adjust it, it would always stick after flooring it. So I took it off and found some beat up worn plastic component on it's back side. Anyway... screw the electric choke, I just left it off of the cab because I dont need it screwing with my gas like that.
