need good advise.
okay so to start i can rebuild an engine no problem, im very knowledgeable of engine parts, just not good on what i should be lookin for part/size wise
im workin with an 010 block. more than likely a 350 4 bolt main. it has 441 heads on it. anybody got an idea of the hp im gettin? ive seen a range from 180-250hp. i can get more numbers if you would like.
anyway im tryin to get a 300hp motor with some good torque but a decent top end. i have a victor jr goin on it (not the best intake but it helps a little on the top end side)
now what im lookin at says the heads are pretty good heads already. id like to use these heads if possible and find a cam that will agree with the heads. ill prolly be running a holley 650 carb, maybe 750 double pump if i feel like killing my fuel milage. id like a good cam but nothing to monsterous since its still kind of a DD. what would everybody recommend for cam sizes? what would you do to get up to 300 hp? anybody know any places around Peoria Illinois thatll give me a good carb tune for a fair price?
btw i have shorty headers and a 2.5" exhaust cut off before the rear axle with a glasspack. not a performance muffler but it sounds good and throaty. a 1985 IROC LSD that has been pretty much rebuilt with a 3.23 gear.
i wont be doing anything for a little while with the engine. just need good advise on what i should get and have a good plan before i jump into it.
any advice is appreciated! please remember i dont have money flowin out of my rear so this is somewhat a budget build.

A Comp Cams 280 would be a good all around cam for you. It is a .480 lift on the intake and exhaust with a 280 adv duration and works good from 2000 to 6000 rpms. It will still give you some low end torque and upper end horsepower. With the 441 heads you would be fine and they would flow plenty for this cam. Also make sure when you do your cam swap that you use lots of lube and use an aditive to your oil for break in. I would change the intake to a dual plane though and not run a carb over say 650. Just to give you an idea I have a 355 with 10.5:1 compression and a .538/.568 lift cam with a 312/322 adv duration and I only run a 750 Demon and I am turning my engine to 6800.

thanks iktna thats the answer i was looin for lol. and i have just a 600 holley on my car right now, would that be alright or to restrictive? and just wondering what the advantages would be to go to the dual plane over the single? and with that cam what would the power increase roughly be? im pretty sure this is the one your talking about here, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-212-2/ if so thats pretty cheap, i was thinking it would be somewhere around 150-200. would this be all that i need for the cam swap is the cam and the lifters?
and it says down here that it requires you to have a stall torque converter rather than stock.
thanks

way wrong cam for those heads, or vice versa. That cam is great for heads that have exhaust flow at least 75% of intake, but your heads aren't there, stock or ported. In your case, you'll get just as much top end HP, and a lot more midrange torque, which is what you really want, with a COMP DualEnergy 275. Try to sell the Victor Jr., It's your enemy, and get an RPMAirGap. On your heads it'll make just as much peak hp as the Jr., but way more midrange torque. Top that with a 750 carb.

alright atilla, this the cam? and im assuming i have a flat tappet since the age of the engine. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL12-209-2/
and these victor jrs sell for about 230 off the shelf, this one has 3000 miles on it, how much you think its worth?
and im guessing this would be the intake http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7501/?image=large
is it true that ill need a stall converter?

yes, you found the parts I named, and you'll be able to run a tighter converter with my combo than with that other one. LG4/LO3 converters stall around 1200 rpm, and that would be unimpressive, but some stock converters will give a stall closer to 1800 rpm, and any of those would serve. If you're scrounging the salvage yard, the loosest stock converters came in S-10s from '96-up with the Vortec-headed 4.3

Re: need good advise.
I think 27 spline was last used in some '85 700R-4s, but it could have extended into '86. Either way, an '88 should have come with the superior 30 spline, and it's the way to go. If you're buying a fresh trans, forget a used converter. You'd just be risking problems.

Re: need good advise.
well i think im going to stick with the trans i have. the previous owner rebuilt this trans a couple years back. he had the paper work for it and it has ~40K miles on it. think im just going to buy a new converter. especially since its only around 200-250 bucks. id rather spend the money and know that nothing is gonna go wrong with it.
so like i asked, is one for 2200-2500 overkill or would it be better off for a 300hp engine? this will still be daily driven so i dont want to hurt fuel economy to much more than i already have.
