1988 iroc ignition timing problems

Ok, so I have just finished installing a hi-flow intake manifold and runners, headers, new o2 sensor, PCV valve, complete new exhaust system, MSD distributor/wires/coil, e3 plugs, cooling fan switch, thermostat, and transmission. I have already tried to time the engine twice but still get the same problem, it wont hold an idle unless i am giving it gas and it backfires a lot, also the catalytic converter got extreamly hot once while timing it. I unpluged the est wire to time it had everything at TDC and adjusted properly but it just wont run right. Im not sure if its off a tooth or what. pulled codes 12 and 42 but was told they were both normal for right now. Everything ran perfect before I worked on it. 88 305 TPI Camaro. Any Ideas would be greatly apprecitated. Thanks
