91 rs not running for more than 30 secs
91 rs not running for more than 30 secs
Ok, I have put a 350 carbed engine in the place of the v6, It is a
this is what i have done so far.
I thought it was the filters so I checked them, seamed ok. Siphoned out of the gas pickup line in the engine bay fine...besides a horrible taste
I was thinking at first it was wiring but it conks out, and only when driving. so that couldnt be it could it ? Also I understand VATS is "Vehicle anti-theft system" would that have something to do with it, not sure what it does but if you can start it and drive it then it kills the ignition after 30 secs ?
If there is anything I missed or something else you need to know just ask, I really want to get this thing running and you guys are a real helpful bunch around here, wouldnt have made it this far without ya
- 1991 camaro rs body
- Came with a V6 3.1 Injected (Took that out, threw a rod)
- Put in a 1979 350ci camaro engine (nothing special added to it, all stock)
- Have a 4 barrel quadrajet rochester
- using the radiator off the v6
- Has a 700r4 transmission out of my old pickup truck with whatever stock is for torque converters (1700-1800 stall ?)
this is what i have done so far.
- Have a ground cable from the block to the battery
- ground cable from motor mount to frame
- wire from dizzy to alt
- alt wire going to positive terminal on battery
- positive terminal battery going to the starter
- Hooked up the ignition wire to the starter that is on the v6 harness
- got a positive and negative going to the batt for the fan ( will get a toggle switch when i get the car going)
- has half a tank of gas
- 6 quarts of tranny fluid added to put it up to the full mark
- Mechcanical fuel pump is pumping out of the electric, two in line filters, one factory one right out of the tank, and another small strainer right before the carb
- have all the grounds that where to the back of the block on the V6 on the chassis. exept for one with blue wires ? looking it up now not sure why it had blue wires so don't wanna ground it yet till I find out what it is.
- Have not snipped or disconnected anything from the engine bay besides the fuel pump regulator
- I have unplugged nothing in the cab and only am running the grounds and ignition wire to the starter as well as the alt plugin off the origonal harness
- Hard to start, takes about three times holding down on the starter to start it.
- Once started sounds great sitting still, but as soon as i give it some gas and go down the road it makes a sound as if im missfiring
- runs in drive going down the road for about 30 seconds then conks out and have to push it back to the house, will not start up after it conks out for 5 mins~
- The alt is burning hot, have taken the serpintine belt of and spun it, no resistance. alt ran great in the last vehicle I had it in.
- When I mash the gas down it has no power, the v6 with a rod nock had more power than this does

- Once on with the ignition key you can put the key in the off posision and the car stays on. have to jump out and pull the neg bat cable to turn the car off.

Read this: (#12) in THIS LINK.
You can't draw fuel thru an in-tank pump that's off, you'll only get a trickle. (running it will make too much pressure). You can also wire the in-tank pump to run continuous and flow gas in a loop up to the mech pump and back to the tank thru the return line.

Sounds like you need to jump the fuel pump relay to stay on with the key. I believe its in the write up. If you don't it'll prime the fuel system fill the lines and carb and you'll run for a bit until you use the priming fuel. I'd suggest "fixing" the relay and then ditching the mechnical pump for a fuel pressure regulator and just use the electronic pump. Not sure what to say about it continueing to run after the key is turned off though.
