<1/2 Tank, Sputters, >1/2 or full Run Much better Whats Going On! Story Inside

Have 87 GTA Vert w/ 88 Formula 5.7 TPI The person I got the engine from said it had 66K miles.

Heres what I have changed.
  • Plugs
  • Wires
  • Cap
  • Fuel Filter
  • Fuel Pump
  • O2 Sensor
  • Injectors
  • Had fuel rail leak, now fixed
  • Had Lower intake leak, now fixed
  • Had a spare ICM and coil (used, I know it was working because it was on the engine I removed from car) replaced them both.
  • Coolant temp sensor
  • MAF (used)
  • ECM (remanufactured)
  • Chip (stock)
After changing engine out I drove this car maybe 2 mths w/ no problems then all of a sudden it started to sputter a little. It got worse and worse till finally one day car died..... started it up and it ran w/ no problem, died again a few minutes later, started it up and ran fine again.

Well finally I started changing stuff and you can see how much I have changed above.

Tonite just finished w/ the injectors and fuel rail and intake stuff. Car ran ok 1st time around block. Came back to bleed brakes (new calipers and drum brake cylinders) went to drive again and started the sputtering.

I noticed was kinda low on gas so I went to fill it up and damn!!!! It ran better like nothing was wrong. Drove about 15 minutes and sputtered again but not as bad, so I shut car off, crank it up while still rolling and wham, its not sputtering.

I stoped to pull of gas cap cause I am now thinking the tank must not be getting air. Nope no diff. So I can only think that my fuel line is clogged.

Long story long, could this be it, any more suggestions? I have no hair but if I did I would probably pull it out! This car did sit up a while before I bought it and it sat maybe 2 mths after the problems started.

Certainly Not a Guru, but I'd put a bottle of Sea Foam in it on my next fill up.

Yes sometimes a 23 and sometimes 13. I tink those are MAT and O2 sensors. Its got a new O2 on it. Is it possible that the o2 is a faulty one. Is there a way to check it.

the o2 code probably set due to a lean exhaust from running out of fuel at times.
i would first check that you have 35 to 37psi of fuel pressure if you do, You can try driving the vehicle when you know it will sputter, then bypass the fuel pressure regulator. that will take your fuel pressure from about 35psi up to 50psi. and if that cures the sputter it is most likely a bad pump or regulator assuming your fuel filter is good.

if you think all of that stuff is ok or checks good try testing and adjusting your throttle position sensor. it can set an o2 code(sounds goofy,i know) and cause a sputter or make it fall right on its face when you nail on it.

Keep it coming fellows I need to get this figured out. I drove this car for about 2 hrs today and it didnt sputter once. I must admit I didnt drive it hard, I did some freeway driving (10 mi worth at about 65-75 mph) also a lot of parkways and stop and go. Usually stop and go would give me problems when the sputtering was at its worst. Scared to death it was going to quit on me today but never sputtered once! The only thing I did was put 2 bottles of fuel injector cleaner in with one tank of preminum gas.

Please dont stop making suggestions though.

there is a hose that sits between the sender and the pump, they tend to perforate and leak.
