serpentine belt kit clearance issues

I want to put the gm serpentine conversion kit on my 82 camaro but my car has trick flow heads that have raised edges where the valve covers attach and im runnin tall aluminium valve covers too. So I wasnt sure if this kit would clear the valve covers. I read through all the posts I could find and didnt see this covered yet so im sorry if it has been. But anyinfo would be great!

Hey, Bent,

Welcome to TGO. Here's my review on GM's serp system. Perhaps the pics will help with your questions.

Re: serpentine belt kit clearance issues

Bent: DON"T DO IT!!!! Why?

1) for $700, you can have a really nice March setup that:
a) doesn't have those big ugly brackets
b) has reallynice pretty chromed or polished aluminum brackets
c) has nice pulleys that are also chrome or polished
d) see a

2) You'll have to change p/s pump, alternator, waterpump, water pump pulley, crank pulley, and A/C compressor if you do this - that's why it's so expensive.

3) If you really want this setup, I'll sell ya mine - I just took all that crap off my 1992 RS, I'll sell it much cheaper (much much much cheaper)

I swapped to the 1/2 serp 1/2 v belt setup from the 1987 IROC, to get rid of those ugly huge brackets - all mine are in tact and available if you want them. I have the two brackets, most of the bolts that attach them, the idler pulley and mount, the alternator, and the water pump, water pump pulley, crank pulley, A/C compressor and all A/C parts except the condensor (the radiator looking part in front of the radiator) - just let me know. I just won't guarantee the A/C stuff - I had swapped it to 134a about a year ago, but never got it to work.

Like I said, let me know, and we'll work it out.

Re: serpentine belt kit clearance issues

Actually I had thought about going with the march type system but the complete kit is like 2000$ and to buy the brackets and the pulleys without the ac stuff etc is still as much as the whole kit from gm and I was kinda wanting it so I could get a brand new ac comp. mines barely workin anymore.... But I am still lookin at other options coz I agree the polished stuff looks WAY better. I guess ill just have to think about it awhile I might take you up on that used one. if nobody beats me to it!

Should you go used, note the GM instruction booklet in the above link.
