Have you done anything like this before? I don't think an oil pump is a good install for a first timer on a wrench. It is bound to be frustrating to you and if you miss out on something you could irreversibly destroy your motor. Enthusiasm is great and I'm all for the fact you want to work on your car, but you might want to have someone help you out this time due to the nature of the problem.

I've never done one on our cars, but looking at clearances I'm betting you'll probably have to unbolt the motor mounts, lift the motor and block it up, drain the oil, drop the oilpan, and THEN swap the oil pump and pickup out. Get a GOOD oilpan gasket and torque it in correct sequence. You might want to think about replacing a rear main seal while you're in there if it is leaking or shows wetness around it. Once again, not recommended if you don't know your way around a wrench.

 

Also, don't use vaseline like that guide says to prime your pump.

Just stick the pickup in some oil and prime it with regular oil or oil additive if you want. No need to gunk up your motor with vaseline or grease. Then you have to put old oil in it just to get it all out or throw away a whole batch of new oil.

 

I just put a new oil pump in my '87 IROC. Also found a small hole rusted through the oil pan right behind the oil cooler pipe. Not a fun job since you have to remove the exhaust, starter, engine mount bolts, oil cooler lines (if you have one), distributor, and then jack up the engine about 4" to get clearance. It took me about 5 hrs and I'm pretty handy with a wrench. If you do it, get a one piece gasket and put the timing mark about 5 o'clock to get the most room. I've always put a little grease in a new pump. You also want to weld or at least epoxy (JB weld) the new pickup to be safe. Be careful. It's easy to hurt yourself or your car if you're not comfortable under there.
