Weird *** problem...

i have a 85 iroc with tpi..so today i took my car to get a smog check everything checked fine except the timing....so i took it to get the timing adjusted because it was 25 over and they set it down to 6...is that the timing its suppose to be?

anyways the weird part is that before the timing being adjusted it ran fine nothing wrong and after i got it back from it getting adjusted the car lost power dramatically and when i was almost home my car was overheating it almost got to the 260 and it was smoking so much that smoke was coming out and you could hear the coolant boiling! so my question is do you guys think they messed with something or what went wrong? please help

Whoever "set" the timing for you didn't know what they were doing. It is set (and checked) with the EST disconnected. 25 is about right at idle with the EST connected (but it's a ballpark, not a "setting" with the EST connected). Setting it at the decal-stated 6 BTDC with the EST connected will cause all of the symptoms you described.

Get your money back, get it set by somebody who knows what they're doing.

How did the smog station "check" it?

Re: Weird *** problem...

yeah i was thinking that they did it wrong because it didnt do that before it ran fine but the smog station didnt check it i went to a test only station and they told me that the timing is what is causing it to fail then i went to a speedee shop and got it done there and i called them when all those problems occurred and they said that hes been doing it for 20 years supposably

what is a good timing for the car to have so it will pass smog in california?

Re: Weird *** problem...

theres two timings>>one without the computer advancing it, and with the computer advancing it. GET a Haynes Manual at Autozone, YOull save moola. So here is your answer: without the computer advancing (tan wire disconnected) it should be 6 Degrees BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER)-------- with computer advancing about 28ish degrees before top dead center. That dude at the shop might have made a mistake. old timers dont get the computer advancing crap. I say convince a smog check place to just check the timing. A lot smog check places know how.. And if you car is running crappy after taking it to the speedeshop, report them to the Better Business Bureau . They want your money. i once had a shop purposely change my tv cable settings to make my tranny fail, and make me come back ( knew how to adjust it right, but if i didnt i would be paying 1500 bucks for a new tranny) and they also unplugged my injector wiring harness, making it misfire. Ill never trust another mechanic that expects to be paid.. NEVER. Those guys are messing with your head. LIES, theyre *****

Post the results from the smog station with the conditions of the test, test results, and pass/fail criteria. We're more likely to be able to help you that way than by what the smog tech said.

The "best" setting for passing smog is the factory setting (that goes for all of the settings).
