alternator/charging system wiring help

I have put a 305 carb engine in place of a v6 injected engine, and am using the same wiring harness. the car will run alright for a few days then the alternator gets killed. this is the second one its killed. the alt just stops charging the battery and then the battery dies. my alternator on the 305 had the same plug as the injected v6 motor so i just pluged it right up without thinking i would have to re-wire anything. closest thing i could find to the problem im having on the forum was this post created in 2004...

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...r-picture.html

I didn't want to resurrect a 5 year old dead post so i just posted a new one. couldn't find my answer in there they seamed to just bicker about ideas then the post died.

if anyone could help me it would be much appritiated. any more information needed i will post for you just ask. thank you kindly.

Re: alternator/charging system wiring help

The alt n wiring is the same; no big changes happen cause of engine.

Now what the problem is, you have a short or bad activation wire.

See an alt doesn’t "work" until it get 12volts [which happens soon as the key it turned on], if a wire is broke on the inside of that or a lose connection, it will blow the alt as you can't energize an alt while it spinning.

I know this cause my buddy had 2 of them to power his stereo system.

He had the 2nd one switched on the dash to power it.

Why? Cause he could decide if it would take away engine power or not, as when energized it take some away to spin it. When it has no power, it just free spins.

He could turn it off at anytime and it didn't matter but if he forgot and was already driving when he turned it on POP warranty time.

Also make sure nothing is rubbin on it.

My FSTB would rub mine on a sharp turn down a grade, and the bar touching the spinning pulley for just a sec, just that much drag would kill it. Happened twice till I ground a 1/8in off the bar in that area so not to rub.
