kill switch under the dash

I had to run inline fuel pump and didnt want to tie into the fuse box so I hot wired with a switch and fuse. This is my first ever eng. swap so everything is a learning experience including all the mods I have had to do. A year ago, I couldnt point out a valve cover so bear with me.

When i go to start the car, when should i turn on the fuel pump?
Will it the pump stay primed? I have a carb in top.
What happens to the fuel if I turn it on too soon? where does it go, i have no return line

make sure the pump is regulated @ 5-7 psi. it doesn't matter when you turn it on as long as the engine doesn't run out of fuel. make sure you have the switch wire to key ignition, that way if you for get to switch it off it won't stay running. you could probably just wire the pump straight to keyed ignition and eliminate the toggle switch.

i guess i should have asked what type of pump, regulator and carburetor you have. a pump will only make X amount of psi. like the holley blue pump is internally regulated at 14psi. so if its left on it won't make like...500 psi and flood your engine and blow the fuel lines.

Re: kill switch under the dash

its rated only 4-9 psi made for a carb, and i put a regulator on there. It's also lighted so I wouldnt forget to shut it off but I am sure it will happen eventually.
The carb is an edel. 650
Should i start the pump and let it run before i start it
and should I hit the switch before turning the car off to burn up the remaining fuel going to the carb?

Re: kill switch under the dash

Just wire the pump to a 12v switched source. Like one of the open spots on the fuse block marked ACC. Then it'll only come on when the key is on. No switch required.

Re: kill switch under the dash

an edelbrock works best at 5 psi, they flood easily. the pump needs to be on whenever the engine is running or being started, don't turn the pump off and let the engine shut off by killing the pump, unless the engine's on fire.

Re: kill switch under the dash

I didnt want to go into the fuse box for fear of screwing anything up, there is already electrical problems but i cant afford to go into that right now. Gonna run some mechanical gauges and i have used a garmin for my speed.

I am hoping to get right around 5 out of it, I mounted it to the pass. wheel well just below the coolant res. I know its easier for them to push than it is to pull but It was so much easier than mounting back by the tank. I just tapped into the old mech. fuel pump lines and finished. no cutting or anything. I will get one in the tank when the inline dies but, I just need to hear this new engine run before I go postal. I pulled the 305 out in November and I am going through third gen withdrawls (@)(@)

I guess i will have to just disconnect the fuel line to the carb and see how ling it takes for the fuel to come out when I turn the switch on. I just dont want to flood the engine on my very first start. The sheet that came with the engine said make sure not to because it can damage the pistons or something by washing off the lube they put there for the first start.
Do you think I really need to be concerned about it?
