86 Trans Am making whistling noise?
Hey guys my 305 TPI is making a weird whistling noise, it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine while it's running, from the belt area. The sound rises in pitch when I rev it. Sounds almost as though the belts are too tight but they don't really feel that way. Can YOU help me?

How would I go about investigating the condition of these components? The alternator was rebuilt, the other things I dunno so I'll have to look at

you should be able to pin point where the noise is coming from.. turn your wheel side to side.. note any difference... check your PS. Fluid note any difference
you may need a ear scope... to listen
take your serp Belt off.. and check all pulleys for bearing play and rotation drag

There is no tension pulley on an '86.
Remove one belt at a time until the noise goes away. That's the component making the noise.
Oh, I recommend shutting off the engine before removing a belt. This ain't a Volkswagen.
