did i just mess up my steering columb?

I was tryign to install a remote starter, to get to the proper wires i removed the 2 13mm nuts and lowered the steering columb.

when i lowered the steering columb i heard a cracking sound. i looked in the engine bay and theres like a brittle plastic/rubber boot that cracked thats part of holding either oil or grease in the steering columb. its jsut after the bolt holding the steering columb to the bar that goes to the gear box.

is this a problem or what? i dont know if i can even replace that boot anymore.

anyone?

Not sure how you broke the steering shaft cover, but it cannot be replaced without replacing the shaft. Its a cover to keep anything that may fall on the shaft from wrapping around it. Its not a critical piece unless you have lots of loose wires/hoses laying around the engine bay

Re: did i just mess up my steering columb?

i just unbolted the steering columb to lower it inside so i can get to the wire harness to install a remote starter.

then i hear a cracking noise.

and thats retarted. gm sucks for making it like that. its jsut a stupid cover and if i wana replace it. i gotta replace everything? no thanks.

i appreciate you getting back to me with your info.

the cover is stil there and and still i none piece wrapped around.

once i lifted and re-bolted the steering columb the crack cant even be seen.

and no there is no hanging wires or anything in the way taht could get tangled

More likely you broke a brake switch for either the tail lights or the cruise. they are directly in the way of the column. The shaft cover is soft plastic and bends quite easily. Unlikely you broke it or head a crunch even if you did
