new motor, car either backfires threw exhaust or tb

Got the new motor in and it wont run. It seems like its trying to start but then it backfires like a shotgun. At first we got it close to 6deg advanced with a light but when when my buddy started adjusting the dizzy it would either pop out of the throttle body or backfire really loud. Could mis-adjusted valves or a bad vacuum leak cause these problems?

could be misadjusted valves but sounds more like dist. is in wrong or firing order isnt right.

Is it 180 out? Like said above it could be too tight on the valve lash. Plug wires could also be crossed. Is is it a 4-7 swap cam?

The distributor shows 3 deg advanced right now with the timing light so I cant see how its off if the #1 spark is being thrown in accordance with the harmonic balancer timing marks.

That being the case I'd try running the valves again but first turn it 180 just to see what happens. It's easy to do and less time consuming than relashing all the valves. Why not try it just to see?

Im going to relash the valves and if that doesnt do it I might have to take the Superram intake off and buy a new set of gaskets........ theres probally an intake leak,, that intake was a PITA like no other to install for the first time.

It's a cam that changes the firing order. The numbers 4 and 7 are swapped. Instead of 18436572 it's 18736542.

the distributor is 180 out. The harmonic balancer is at TDC for the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke thats why it lines up with the light.

Come on, guys, it wouldn't run at all if the distributor was 180 degrees off.

You should re-read his first post. He does state that it won't run at all.

It seems like it's gotta be that. It's worth a shot and won't take very long.

Yea, that video is in his sig. He says at least 3 times in his original post the car does not run. I'd say it doesnt run.

Re: new motor, car either backfires threw exhaust or tb

That is correct. It does NOT run. The video is the car running with the old 350 in it(which turned out to have 3 broken pistons). The new 385 is what I have in the car now.

Re: new motor, car either backfires threw exhaust or tb

Dizzy was 180, shes running now but the superram has a massive intake leak,,,,, Im going to order a new gasket kit and now that I have some experience putting the intake together Im confident itll be leak free this time
