more newbie timing questions

I am asking about an 1988 4.3 liter 6 cylinder tbi motor
What will make the timing go out of adjustment, that is to say, if nothing wears out, the timing would stay the same.
Recently I started experiencing drivability problems out of the blue. I moved the distributor around a 1/4 inch and now everything is back to normal.
I would guess some thing is wearing out? The truck now runs pretty good, but this weekend my neighbor is going to check the timing.
I notice the dizzy gear is swirled as opposed to straight cut like the rice burners. So is it possible to move the gear a tooth on a chevy. My neighbor moved my ford dizzy a tooth and it ran a lot better.
Also, how do you reinstall a chevy dizzy, I would guess you need to align the marks made prior and wiggle the body and rotor slightly? timing chain is going.
How much should my rotor move when I move the crank nut, I am thinking maybe my timing chain is going
