jacking up the whole rear of the car, help

Im a little bit lost and scared. My fuel pump went out so i need to know how to jack the rear of the car up so i can drop the tank. Am i able to just jack the rear of the car up and put it on jacks without it rolling forward, or do i need to put the hole car on jacks. IF someone could show me where to jack the car up and how i should go about doing this, it would be great. Thanks

re: jacking up the whole rear of the car, help

If on a relatively level surface, you can just place the rear of the car on jackstands - make sure to chock the front wheels first. You need as much room as possible to get the tank out - you want the rear end as high as you can get it with the nose almost touching the ground - use a block of wood on your jackto get increased lift.

Jack the rear by placing the jack under the differential (with the wood), jack until the nose is almost touching, then put jack stands under each side, on the framerails, just in front of the lower control arms, then let it down slowly until the weight of the car is on the stands, but the weight of the rear axle is on the jack. Then bump the car with your hip, push on it, see if you can get it to fall - I always do this assuming that if I can't make it fall, then it won't on it's own.

Remove the shock bolts from the axle, and remove the sway bar end links. Remove the panhard rod, and that other brace above it. Then lower the rear axle as far as it will go WITHOUT stretching/breaking the brake line on the driver side. Then it's exhaust removal. Then you can start wrestling the tank - you want to wrestle the tank towards the rear and pass side.

You'll get to a point where the neck won't twist out of the fender - you'll have to get the neck wedged, then slightly gently put pressure on it to bend the neck just slightly enough so it will come out. Patience and gentle pressure is the key here. When you get the tank reinstalled, take a long bar, stick it it the filler hole, and rebend the neck very gently to line back up centered in the fender hole.

Hope that helps!
