ignition question

so im about to do the ole tuneup on my 87 GTA and just have a few questions for you guys. first off im putting hooker shortys and cat on soon afterwards and was told that since the headers put out a lot of heat that id need better plug wires. i was told MSD make some that work really well so i was going to get them and an MSD cap and rotor with the tuneup. i was just wondering if i can get the cap and rotor and use them on my factory distributor or if id need an MSD dis. thanks guys in advance

Re: ignition question

In regards to heat problems, MSD wires wouldn't be any better than any other brand. You just need to make sure that whatever you use for wires that they are routed in such a way as to not touch the headers.

Cap brand doesn't matter either, but you cannot change distributors unless you get another computer controlled distributor.

I would highly suggest not changing anything else until after you do the header job. You know your wires now work, you're going to be disconnecting them in order to do the headers, if the car runs poorly afterwards, at least you know it's not the wires, cap, etc. that are bad, and so maybe you got one routed wrong. If you do alot of changes at the same time, and something goes wrong, then you have alot of options to go though to find the problem. One change at a time means way fewer things to check in the event of an issue afterwards.
