Re: new member...help

That's something that's not often asked for.
It's easily described, but the catch is that if the distributor has ever been out, then it may have been re-installed with different clocking.
Most people buy running cars, then replace wires one at a time, to avoid this exact situation.
If you're not sure, you will need an experienced mechanic.
Once you know where the rotor is pointing with the #1 piston at top center on it's compression stroke, then the rest is easy.
We need more info from you if we're to be any more helpful. Did you buy the car with all the wires missing? Did you remove all 8 due to not knowing any better?

Starting at the wire for cylinder 1, the order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 going clockwise around the distributor. The drivers side of the motor is the odd numbers with #1 up front. The passenger side is the even numbers with #2 up front.

Finding where #1 is supposed to be on the distributor is where it can get a little tricky. Best way I know of is to pull out the #1 spark plug. With the distributor disconnected, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and have someone turn the motor over by hand. When you feel air rush out, line your timing tab up with the balancer. Now pull the cap off the distributor and see where the rotor is facing. It should be somewhat facing straight fowards. Mark where the rotor is facing and put the cap back on. The terminal on the cap that lines up with where the rotor was facing is number 1. Then the rest of the wires go on in the order I mentioned above. You would still need a timing light though to accurately set the timing.

Re: new member...help

SBC firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. You'll have to identify te #1 firing terminal on the dizzy, ten it is easy from there.

The following diagram will get you very close, regarding where the dizzy is positioned.
