Need some info as to what the car/engine has now...but gears may help a lot if it's got lazy highway gears.

It would help to know more info on your car. Year? Transmission Type? Carbed, Fuel injected?
For a budget, it depends on your budget. Hooker 2055 headers (Jet Coated or Ceramic coated if you can afford it), 3" catback. 3.73 gears. You're probably looking at $800 - $1k in cost, including labor if you have someone else do the install. You can probably find used parts on EBAY or here for cheaper than new though so the price really is variable especially if you do your own work.
From here you get into the "other" bolt on mods. This would be a new intake and heads. For a 305, I would recommend the World Products SR Torquers for the 305, or have work done on your stock heads. The key to this is the 1.94" intake valves. Also, have your intake and heads "port matched", also make sure the gaskets are "port matched".
