Can someone tell me what this is, looks like a sensor!

Hey, so I had to put a new thermostat gasket on my engine the other day and I noticed that a sensor (I guess) was unplugged. So I plugged it back in, but noticed it was broken, and that's why it had fallen out...probably when I was doing what I was doing. My question is, is it important? It seems to be, when it's unplugged the engine idles really weird, rough and low. Also can it be replaced, and what exactly is it. I circled it in the picture, thanks for any info in advance!!

Looks to be the Coolant Temp Switch (CTS ) ; a main sensor for computer operation

Exactly what vetteoz stated. Essential for correct engine operation. Replace it with engine cold , water in there, could lose a very small amount of coolant

Without the CTS, Im amazed it runs at all. Mine wouldnt idle.

Definitely the CTS and it definitely needs to get replaced.
