Fuel pump pulsator needed?

Just wondering, replacing my fuel pump tomorrow on my ls1 swap z28. I still have the original return style fuel system with the stock tank. It has a walbro that went out after 7 years. My question is can I remove the fuel pump pulsator? I read that it's the hose the runs to the pump inside the tank. Several sites say to remove it. What does it actually do, and do I need it?

Thanks!
