Nice! Right? I'm probably doing about 120 or so, but who knows. Which brings along 2 questions...

1st- Why did Chevrolet put an 85 mph speedometer on the 85 Z28 and then up it to a 140 mph speedometer in the 86 Z28??? There were no upgrades as far as I know. So why? It doesnt make sense!

2nd- How hard would it be to swap speedometers? Is it a simple swap or do I need to have it calibrated???

Speed Limit - Depends On The Restrictor Plate

Insufficient speedometers were mandated in 1979 by NHTSA.

It was an attempt to make you drive in slow motion.

Also you’ll notice the very slow speed of 55 is in a different color on your speedometer in an attempt to remind drivers if you reach 56 MPH the World will explode.

The above nonsense was repealed in 1981.

However there is lead time for making changes.

You have a 1985 therefore it might be mechanically driven.

In that case, you can change the driven gear in the transmission.

ok cool. so is that a pretty easy thing to do? like can i reasonably do it myself with a little bit of common sense? or am i better off having someone do it for me?

One way is to retain the present speedometer, change the trans gear, and read off what is now the KPH scale.

That would render a 160 MPH speedometer at pin.

The other way is to install the 140 MPH faced speedometer then change the trans speedometer gear.

Also, because you want to change the differential gears, you should do that first so you won’t have to change the trans speedometer gears twice.

can i reasonably do it myself with a little bit of common sense?
Yes however it does involve draining some fluid and you might have to replace the O-ring so have a new one available.
