Re: timing my motor
I ordered a timing tape - Mr. Gasket (and several others) make them - it's just tape with timing marks on it, and sticks on the balancer, about $10. You just have to measure which balancer size you have (diameter). Ordered mine through O'Reilly's, but you could order at AutoZone, Advance, Summit, anybody really - just have to find a counter person that knows how to look up performance parts in the books rather than in the computers.
You put the mark on the tape over your balancer mark. Then, when using a regular timing light, you look to see what number on the tape is at 0 on your timing tab - that's what your timing is - works at any rpm, so you can see what your total timing is at any given rpm, and also so you can see at what rpm your total timing is all in by.

Re: timing my motor
You don't even need the tape, just measure the number of degrees you want from the TDC mark on the balancer and scribe a mark.

Re: timing my motor
So lets say for example only, that 1/4in equals 4 degrees... if you scribe a line on the balancer 1/4in to the RIGHT of the existing mark (facing engine), then when that scribed mark is reading at 12*BTDC, that is actually 16*BTDC? (the real OEM mark would be slightly LEFT of the timing tab and thus have no reference point since stock timing tab stops at 14)
Do I have the correct thinking here?
