Steering problems.
I just picked up a high mileage 89 Firebird, and on the way home I noticed that it had quite excessive play in the steering wheel.
I got the car up in the air, and I think the tie rods are fine. What are the chances that it's the steering gear box?
I also noticed, when I got the tires off, some idiot lost the dust cap for the passenger side. It looks pretty nasty in there, and I plan on pulling it apart and inspecting it anyways, but could this be my source of steering wheel play?

Re: Steering problems.
Dust cap just protects bearings - would not affect steering.
More than likely, tie rods and ball joints have not been replaced and need it. Also look into a new idler arm.
BTW there is a suspension section - alot more info there.

Ya, just found the suspension area a little while ago. Lots of good info there.
I will take a closer look at the tie rods, ball joints, and idler arm. Thanks
