Steering Column

Just new here, and have recently pick up a 1989 Z28 with a broken column. I was able to track one down at a auto wrecker not to far from me, my question is, the column from a standard the same as automatic.

Re: Steering Column

There's one issue with columns you need to know - VATS. Your car has VATS - you'll need to keep the original key from your column. If the column you are getting is pre 1989, it will not have VATS - so you'll have to bypass your VATS on the dash side, or else replace the ignition cylinder with a VATS cylinder, and get a key cut for the new cylinder that has the same resistor value as the old key.

If it's a 1989 or later column, you'll need to get a new key cut shaped for the new lock, but with the resistance value from the old key.

Make sense?

Re: Steering Column

Thanks for the quick response, the VATS. has been bypassed already , I do have the keys from the old column, and the column from the wreckers has keys (not sure if it is pre 89). I`m told the only difference should be the standard column has a lever to release the key when you the turn ingnion off ,and pull the key out . I guess the lever should not effect a automatic shift ? Anyway the best price on a used column here in Canada was 385.00 before shipping, and that would be one from a automatic. So the one I did find which is from a standard shift was 150.00 , and is a short drive away from here.
Thanks again for your help

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Steering Column

Right: the auto column has the collar that the shifter works to release the key only in Park, but the std column has the release lever.

Other than that, they are the same. VATS works (or fails to) the same, in both.

Re: Steering Column

I think you'll need to remove that release cable from the shifter (if your car is auto), otherwise the shifter won't move.

I was just into my column today replacing ignition switch - without the cable connected to the ignition switch, my shifter (auto) would not move at all.

So, it's something you'll have to kinda figure out when you get there. I'd like you to update me on what you had to do with it if in fact you end up swapping in a manual column into an auto car (I'm just curious).
