1987 GTA Trans Am

This is day 2 of working on the car and it drove pretty good the first day then back fired twice and seemed to run like crap afterward. Unscrewed the gas cap and seemed to be ALOT of pressure behind it, so i left it kinda loose. Checked the spark plugs and distributor cap and tried to adjust the time and that seemed to help for a second. Its not idling completely right and we only work on our cars. we dont take them to a shop. so i would really like to avoid that. I think it may be the plug wires or the dist. cap. (maybe) dont really know. All i know is that i have my beautiful dream car and now i need it to start running right. The car sat for 3 years. So im sure it needs kinks and stuff worked out of it. I rescued it from a junk yard pretty much!

Is this the stock TPI system on the car? Everything else stock? Did you unplug the EST wire before setting timing?

Re: 1987 GTA Trans Am

EST = electronic spark something (I'm drawing a blank) LOL.

The timing is computer controlled - you have to disconnect the EST wire in order to check or adjust base timing - if you don't the computer just changes the timing all the time and you can't get a fix on it.

The EST wire is brown, has a connector in the middle - on pass side close to the strut tower, it exits the main pass side harness, then goes right back into the same harness. Unplug that connector, then start car and check/adjust base timing to spec, then shut off car, reconnect, done.

You might try pulling codes as well just to see if anything is there - an be done with a paperclip https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes

Re: 1987 GTA Trans Am

Wow, thanks alot. I will try that tomorrow morning asap! Its late tonight and ive been underneath the car all day replacing the starter. (actually i didnt have a new one so i had to take 2 and make one good one lol) so ive been messing with it for about 10 hours and im tired. I really hope that works though. But it definatley wouldnt hurt to try! You must be a schooled mechanic to explain it like that. ive been working on cars all of my life but ive never went to school for it....most of it should be common sense though. sometimes stuff is harder to figure out without actually knowing about it.
