Firebird Headlight Pellet Material

Hi all,

I had the common problem with the Firebird headlights not staying up (falling down while driving). I dis-assembled the assembly to find the three pellets that drive the gear were disintegrated (looked like the inside of a Silica gel packet).

So, having a full machine shop at work, I decided to make some new ones. I wasn't sure what material to use so erring on the cautious side I decided to use Polypropelyne because I knew it wouldn't hurt the gear.

Well that worked great, for about one year. Now here I am having a problem again. They don't fall down but there is a LOT of play in them and they bounce a bit. So I took them apart again and the pellets are worn flat on one side. So now I need to make some new ones with a harder plastic.

The question I have is what material have any of you used successfully? I have Delrin, Nylon, Acetal and other materials at my disposal. I know there are a couple of companies making these things, and selling them through references on this board, maybe one of them would like to share the info... this is a resource sharing message board, right?

Thanks,

Bill

I would use aluminum or Delrin, but I do find it ironic that you "redesigned" yours & they are being you troubles again. While my 20year+ (1987 drivers side & 1989 passenger side...had to replace one after hitting a deer) are still going strong.

I was afraid of wiping out the plastic gear, and I have no idea what material GM used, that's the reason I went with the softer material... Thanks for the input though

Maybe redo both/whatever 2 surfaces (i've never looked inside) that mesh? That way they are all stronger?

Re: Firebird Headlight Pellet Material

The last set I made were nylon spacers (hole in the middle) and they're working just fine after a few years.
