Re: specs
If the tranny is an automatic, then it's a 700R4.
The 8th digit of the VIN number will tell you what it was made with:
T = 3.1 litre V6 Multi Port Injection
8 = 5.7 litre V8 (350) Tuned Port Injection (TPI) L98
E = 5.0 litre V8 (305) Throttle Body Injection (TBI) L03
F = 5.0 litre V8 (305) Tuned Port Injection (TPI) LB9
Engine specs (hp/torque) can be seen at this Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrol...l-block_engine
Rear gears - more than likely if it's a TBI then it will have 2.73 peg leg (not positraction). I don't think TBI cars with auto's ever had anything else. Some TPI cars had 3.23 or 3.73 rear gears and positraction. A few had 2.73 positraction. Unless you know for sure that the car has never had a rear swap or gear swap, the only real way to know what's inside the diff is to open it up and look.
Your RPO codes will tell you alot of info as well - we have an RPO decoder here: https://www.thirdgen.org/rpodecoder
This is of course all assuming that the car is all still factory and no previous owner has changed anything out.
Off the main page of TGO, there are Technical Specs, Technical Articles, and Third Gen Tech FAQ (links on the left hand side) - some great reading there! And the
function here works great!
