Quick question

84 camaro z28 H.O.

Theres a cord with a plug I was told was used to warm u the engine on cold days before you start it.

How do I find out if it still works. Do i just plug it in and find out? And is it a good idea?

Sounds like an oil heater - basically a small electric blanket that gets attached to the oil pan (I assume) that warms the oil to help with cold starts. A Yankee thing - we don't usually get that cold here in the south. Trace the cord under the car and see where it goes, and see what's there. Plug it in, and if you don't blow a house fuse, then wait 10 minutes and see if whatever the cord attaches to becomes warm. Then you'll know it still works.

May also be a block heater which has a heating element fitted in one of the freeze plug holes in block
to keep coolant warm.

GM fitted them std to lots of vehicles ; especially trucks

Haha thats why im left describing it. People look at my me like im crazy when I forget the official names of an object.
