I have a 97 camaro ss with a lt1 that has a hard start issue when cold, i found that the fuel pressure isnt holding after the initial prime. Ive been told that there is a check ball in the fuel pump that holds pressure at the fuel rails. So everything is peachy after the car starts running, but because the pressure bleeds back to the tank so fast, it makes the car just hard to start. The logical thing would be to pull the tank and install another $200 fuel pump, but i had an idea.

If I install a switch to keep the pump on so that the pressure at the fuel rails will stay high enough the start the engine, will there be any ill effects? I had a similiar setup with my trans am, i had a carbed 383, but had an efi pump so I had to use a switch and 2 regulators to drop the pressure enough. Like i said, the pump works fine, but it just makes the car hard to start, should I install a switch until the pump finally bites the dust?

 

I also own a 1997 LT1 - but I'm no expert there. I'd think if the pressure wadropping so quickly between prime and start, that maybe there's an issue with the fuel pressure regulator? But where that is exactly, how to diagnose/repair/replace etc. I have no clue - I've never had to do much to my LT1 (yet).
