tpi vs carb

whats the pros and cons of a tpi vs carb setup

looking at a used tpi 350 to swap for my 305 carb in my 86 camaro

what would i have to do to use the tpi system if my stock setup was setup for a carb?

what would i have to do to take that engine from tpi to carb i believe i can replace the intake but im not 100% sure on that what about heads etc???

Re: tpi vs carb

The swap to TPI is fairly involved but also fairly straight forward. Ive done several. You really want to have the complete donor car. You can buy the ECM and harness along with the engine but you may have issues if the harness was damaged or if they left out some part that isnt present in the recipient car. You also need to have a fairly developed working knowledge of automotive electrical systems and repair and know how to decipher wiring diagrams.

The basic bodies are the same. All of the cutouts needed for the ECM harness are there on either car. However, the wiring will probably be different and you will need to understand the differences and how to make the needed changes to the recipient car's wiring. I do these jobs without cutting and splicing anything. If you have all the right pieces, splicing isn't necessary. Of course you'll need a good set of wiring diagrams for both cars.

my 86 camaro has an original 305 v8 5.0 carb engine bad and dont want to invest in rebuilding a 305 found a 350 and 305 for a nice reasonable price the 350 is a complete 350 tpi the 305 was tpi but the guy took the tpi intake and selling the block as is with everything else expect the intake on up
i want to take a tpi engine and make it carb whats required???

Re: tpi vs carb

To convert TPI to carb, you will need an intake manifold and non EST distributor. If the motor is 87 or later, you will most likely need an intake with angled bolt holes for the 4 middle most bolts. You'll be able to tell the difference on close inspection. If the csr had a mechanical fuel pump and you're using an 87 or later motor, you will probably want to install an electric fuel pump rather that deal with converting the motor to mechanical pump.
